Soosiz HD
Brilliant Platformer Upgraded for the iPad
Posted May 8, 2010
Visually upgraded from Soosiz for the iPhone / iPod Touch, Soosiz HD for the growing iPad audience is a platformer at heart, but with one key difference. The game uses changes in gravity to move the character within the world. This creates a level spinning experience that’s unmatched in other titles on the iPad. The main character (a cute little fuzz ball) jumps from island to island while the world flips right side up, matching the character movements.
Levels are built to take full advantage of the spinning world, specifically to make you search for hidden objects and make the occasional leap into the unknown. Little fuzz ball friends are spread over each level. When found, they become a follower and allow for increased jump height for that particular level. There’s also a coin system in play. If you collect 100 coins, the player has the option of turning on invincibility for a short period.

While the early levels introduce you to things like springboards and different power-ups, the latter levels are designed to be puzzles. The game also rewards you when finding those little fuzz buddies by opening up bonus levels. Bonus levels consistently throw curve balls at you like removing the games control system and utilizing the accelerometer inside the iPad.
Controls are very simple, but perfectly effective and responsive. The character has the ability to move left and right as well as jump. The entire journey covers seven different worlds that are based in different venues (space, underground, underwater, green forest, etc…). There’s a solid 66 levels to complete to beat the game, a task that will take many hours to complete. There is no multiplayer function with Soosiz HD, but it’s not a game that would take advantage of such modes.

If you have purchased Soosiz for the iPhone, you won’t find any new content in the iPad version; just a higher resolution design. That being said, Soosiz feels much more at home on the iPad in that the iPhone version almost seems cramped; specifically the layout of the controls.
In any case, the sheer amount of content that comes with Soosiz HD combined with the entertainment value makes the title a no-brainer to pick up if you have an iPad. If you love platformers, you can’t go wrong with laying out $1.99 for Soosiz HD on the app store.

Graphics
- The high resolution visuals are gorgeous, colorful and bold on the iPad. The simplicity of the visuals is also what gives the game its charm. The bright, striking colors bring the different worlds to life and continue to impress throughout the entire game’s progression.
- The physics engine is almost flawless. While the landscape almost feels too big at times to make certain jumps, the gravity spinning world adapts immediately to how the character moves along the screen.
Audio
- The background music is light, bouncy and accurately fits this Mario-esqe world that the developer created. There a surprising variety to the amount of music that pops up in not only each world, but also each level. Sound effects are cute and offer a decent amount of ambient noises to bring the world to life.
